Tub Fillers and Faucets: Floor-Mount, Wall-Mount, and Deck-Mount Explained

A Bay Area guide to tub fillers — floor-mount vs. wall-mount vs. deck-mount, flow rate and fill time, hand-shower fillers, and matching a filler to your freestanding or drop-in tub.

The filler is the faucet that fills your tub, and on a beautiful freestanding or drop-in bath it's as much a design statement as the tub itself. But fillers aren't interchangeable — the type you choose depends on your tub's installation, your plumbing rough-in, and how fast you want the tub to fill. Choosing the wrong style means re-plumbing the floor, so let's get it right. Here's how tub fillers work and how to match one to your tub.

The Three Mounting Types

Every tub filler falls into one of three mounting categories, and your tub installation largely dictates which one fits.

  • Floor-mount (freestanding) filler: A tall faucet that rises from the floor next to the tub. This is the iconic look for a freestanding tub. It demands a precise floor rough-in placed exactly where it needs to stand, with no margin for relocation after tile.
  • Wall-mount filler: Mounts on the wall above the tub. Ideal for alcove tubs and freestanding tubs positioned close to a wall. Keeps the floor clear and is often the simplest plumbing.
  • Deck-mount filler: Installs on the rim of a drop-in tub or the surrounding deck. Requires the tub or platform to have mounting holes or a deck wide enough to accommodate it.

Why Flow Rate and Fill Time Matter

A deep soaking tub holds a lot of water, and nobody wants to wait 20 minutes for a lukewarm bath. Tub fillers are exempt from the low-flow rules that limit shower heads, so a quality filler delivers a high flow rate to fill the tub quickly while the water is still hot. When choosing a filler for a large tub, look at its rated gallons per minute — an undersized filler on an oversized tub is a recipe for frustration. Brands like Brizo, Riobel, hansgrohe, Grohe, and Delta build fillers engineered to fill deep tubs efficiently.

Fillers With a Built-In Hand Shower

Many fillers include an integrated hand shower on a flexible hose — one of the most practical features you can add. It lets you rinse hair, clean the tub, and bathe children or pets without a separate fixture. A diverter on the filler switches flow between the spout and the hand shower. If your tub doubles as a place to wash the dog or rinse off, a filler with a hand shower is well worth it.

Matching the Filler to the Tub

Beyond mounting type, consider these fit details:

  • Spout reach: The spout must extend far enough over the tub's rim to pour into the basin, not down the outside.
  • Spout height: Tall freestanding fillers look dramatic but should suit the tub's depth and your ceiling.
  • Valve compatibility: Like shower valves, many fillers have a separate rough-in valve and trim. Buy matching components from the same series.

Rough-In Is Everything

The single most important step with a floor-mount or deck-mount filler is getting the rough-in location exactly right before the floor or deck is finished. The supply lines come up through the floor at a fixed point, so the filler and tub positions must be coordinated together during planning. A few inches off and the spout won't line up with the tub. This is where working with experienced fixture specialists pays off.

Coordinate the Finish

Your filler should share a finish family with your shower trim, vanity faucets, and hardware. A polished chrome filler beside matte black accessories looks unintentional. We help customers select a tub filler, shower system, and vanity fixtures that all speak the same design language.

Get the Filler Right the First Time

The filler ties your tub to the rest of the bathroom, and its rough-in is unforgiving — so plan it carefully.
